TastingBritain.co.uk - Launch @ Leman Street Tavern, Aldgate, London

Tasting Britain got the invite down to the official launch of the Leman Street Tavern (which has actually been opened and trading for a few months now). It describes itself as âa city pub for city peopleâ and, like most of the Geronimo Inns, focuses more heavily on the food offering than your âaverageâ pub. Based at the new development; Goodman Fields in Aldgate/Whitechapel, the tavern itself is stripped down and minimalist for the main part - the immediate surroundings appears to be one GIANT building site at the moment so itâs safe to say that lots is going to happen in the near future.

As for the food and drink offering, I didnât really get to try much of the food but as I understand itâs on the main part traditional British with a few updates/tweaks/modern touches - kinda like a lot of gastropubs (...dare I say it?). As for the drink - rather respectable - they donât go too deeply into any one drink category but they have a lot of stuff across the board. As you can hopefully see from the pictures, lots of new things on draught (as well as a few old favourites). No idea about the cocktail offering but they had enough whisky/whiskey/bourbon to keep me distracted for a few hours - including some less common expressions from the New York (state) based Hudson Distillery that I hadnât seen in a bar before!

As for the pub itself: the Geronimo Inns were founded by a husband and wife couple, The Clevelys, back in 1995 when they opened their first place in south-west London, the Chelsea Ram. The pair had just come back from Australia and had been inspired by the 'food ledâ pubs theyâd experienced when out there. Fast forward a few years, to December 2010 - Geronimo Inns are growing like crazy and Youngs decide to buy them out in a £60 million buyout. Nice. You take Youngs 100+ years of pub experience and combine it with the new approach the Clevelys brought to the business and you can perhaps see why theyâre still expanding now. Last time I checked they were up to 35 and are planning to open 5 more a year.

Nothing spectacular or too novel here buuuuuut a good gastropub all the same, in a great spot with a rather versatile drinks selection. The Leman Street Tavern would be well worth your time if you find yourself in Aldgate and are feel so inclined...
