TastingBritain.co.uk - Som Saa Residency @ Climpson's Arch, London Fields, London
Tasting Britain was invited down to East London to experience the mouth searing joy that is the cuisine from the 'Land Of Smiles'. Thanks, Thailand!
Som Saa is a Thai restaurant, currently living in Climpson's Arch, London Fields - and is the brainchild of chef Andy Oliver (who is co-founder and head chef). Andy made a name for himself back in 2009 after making it all the way to the finals in Masterchef. This happened quite soon after he quit his city job to pursue a presumably more fulfilling career in Thai cuisine. Since then, he's done rather well for himself. Andy's worked on street food with the likes of Alan Yau, plus a few stints in restaurants such as . Som Saa is currently enjoying an extension on its summer residency (and we can assume that this extension is due to popular demand)
Anyhow, Andy worked alongside Singha beer to develop a bunch of new recipes, presumably paired with the beer. this menu supposedly focuses on more under represented regions of Thai cuisine, such as North and North Eastern Thailand. As you can see by the sheer volume of, AAA on the table - Andy has been pretty busy. It was all pretty great, but if I had to pick a favourite it'd be the deep fried sea bass. A simultaneously magical and messy thing. That said, it is hard to do sea bass wrong - it's kinda 'delicious by default'
As far as I know, Singha was the first beer to be brewed 'properly' in Thailand (getting 'royal permission' to do so) - beginning production in 1933. It's certainly the only Thai beer that I can think of. Fun fact: 'som saa' is a type of extremely rare Thai lime - I am told that it 'smells like a cross between a lime and a mandarin and is used for its perfume and sweet juice.' Second fun fact: "Chai-Yo" is the Thai way to say "cheers" - I'd use this more often but I don't think I have any Thai friends (which is kinda sad actually - any Thai people wanna be my friend? No? Ok...)
