My wife wanted a return trip to Catbells so she could get a photo of the trig point at the top. Alfred Wainwright describes Catbells as "a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together" Well - we put the grandmother part to the test and it was hard going up some of the wet, slippery rocks. I had to literally drag Donna up one part near the top. It wasn't made any easier by us going up in the dark with headtorches

Last time we went up we failed to get to the trig point and also missed the actual sunrise as we had stopped in heavy fog thinking we had already reached the summit. So this time we gave ourselves more time and took a steady walk up.

We could tell we had picked the right morning - the valley was shrouded in mist and we broke through that into clear visibility about halfway up the fell. Such amazing views in all directions. We were soon joined at the top by a few younger couples all out to see the sunrise. Donna and I spent an hour taking photos and watching it all unfold before continuing the circular walk back down to the lake and round to the car park. We were out walking for 6 hours and loved every minute of it
