The Amazon scrolling keyword sign
This was one of the more satisfying hacks I did while working at Amazon. I bought a few LED marquee units off Ebay, wrote some control software to speak their language, wrote some more to do realtime sampling of the queries being run on the Amazon Search systems, connected it all together and hung the sign outside my office. Everyone liked it, especially the boss, who had always wanted such a thing but hadn't wanted to devote the resources to making it. The power supply went bad on the thing and I didn't think anyone would devote the effort to fixing it, so I took it with me when I left.
The exposure was too long to freeze the sign. The keywords it was displaying were actually: "dog, coach keyrings, canon sd430, refactor telescope, exilm, Emo layouts, charlieandlola, red, fairy tale, english patient, Twilight Princess, battery 2032, franklin covey her point of view, pink argyle."
