Pulp Fiction

At the very start of our holiday we had to kip the night at Manchester Airport, Terminal 3, which was a hideous experience as all the shops that yoo'd like to browse in (books, CDs etc) closed, there is very little open in terms of food and drink, and it is impossible to sleep. I thought that I would have time to get a decent paperback or two to read but after being herded mega-stressfully through check-in like animals there was no time to check out the wares in W H Smith.

Finding something to read in our area of Sofia on the first day that wasn't in Cyrillic wasn't so easy but at the second-hand book stalls (near the men on bench sculpture) I managed to find 'The Big Story' by Morris West.

It's a late 1950s thriller about a journalist, told in a sort of sub-James Bond kind of way. But, do you know what? It turned out to be a terrific page turner (despite the pages being very acidic and dried out by the sun)! Very enjoyable indeed.

In Sozopol I tried to search out another pulpy novel. I found 'The Pistol' by James Jones, author of 'From Here To Eternity'. It was completely shit.
