Nubble Light [Explored]
Nubble Light (Cape Neddick Lighthouse) was commissioned in 1874, when President Rutherford B. Hayes appropriated $15,000 for the project, and construction was completed in 1879. Nubble Light is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine, and is a popular subject for calendars. This iconic lighthouse is currently undergoing a major and historically accurate restoration, including the keeper's house and light tower. Many people who stopped to see this lighthouse were disappointed to see scaffolding around the tower, since this was their first and only opportunity to see this Maine treasure. But we have viewed this lighthouse every year for the last 22 years and to us it is like an old friend. We are very glad to see that it is undergoing its much needed preservation. When I took this photo the temperature was 84F and people were swimming in the ocean, very unusual for Maine in October. York, Maine.
