Mmmmmm, bugs!

It has been a lot of fun and very educational to be able to watch avocets go from their mating rituals to seeing the little chicks explore their new surroundings. Most of the time, however, they have been far enough away so that I was not able to get the detail and sharpness I was hoping for. That changed yesterday. This little one and its two siblings got so close to me that when mom or dad walked into view, they framed my shot. The chicks walked up the shore from where I was kneeling into some cattails (great backgrounds!) and then back towards me and then swam away with the adults. This one was walking and dipping the little midges that were floating on the pond's surface.
