Backlit Coyote

I get the fact that coyotes get a bad rap - and sometimes deservedly so. We have them around where we live and I have heard the stories of dogs and cats disappearing with the coyotes getting most of the blame. Still, I love it when I get to hear their plaintiff calls at dusk and what certainly sounds like a joyous reunion when they greet each other at the end of the day.

While I was hopeful to get photos of a fox (still waiting) I am also happy to have seen and captured the other two species of the wild canine trifecta, this coyote being the first. It was walking along the Gibbon River in Yellowstone and I think it was trying to cross the road and head into timber. It stopped here between two trees, looking back towards the river. While the light wasn't the best, I still love how the fringes of its fur and chin whiskers are backlit and glow with the late afternoon sun. The thing that struck me the most about it were those amazing eyes - I'll never forget how I saw that golden color looking right at me in my camera's viewfinder!
