Watchful Eye
While not the best photo, I felt compelled to post this because of the story it tells. We were walking along the beach on Sanibel Island when I noticed a mother snowy plover keeping a watchful eye as her three chicks scurried about on the sand. The snowy plover is a State-designated threatened species as recognized by the state of Florida. It nests in the sand along the beach and as such faces much danger from development and the sheer numbers of people and pets that walk along the shore. The statistical threat is so great that less than one of these three will survive to adulthood.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Fund (SCCF) does a tremendous amount of work to search out and protect snowy plover nests as well as many other conservation efforts. Their website can be found at www.sccf.org/. Through their efforts and better public awareness and education we can hope that the plover population can stabilize.
