Up close

Handholding the 600mm is not my ideal way to shoot wildlife, but when the opportunity arises you need to go for it. Even though the jeep and I were at least 200 yards away from the youngsters (they showed up as tiny little specks in the viewfinder after I zoomed in), this American Avocet decided I was too close and proceeded to display its fighting poses and squawked incessantly, daring me to tangle with it. It got so close I could not frame it without cutting off its long legs. Knowing it would kick my butt, I retreated leaving it to bask in its victory.
