Week 7: What Comes Next
Welcome to week 7 of project fifty two.
I take technology for granted. But every now and then, I suddenly become hyper aware that I am actively participating in something so completely bizarre that I become overwhelmed with the awe and wonder of what mankind has achieved. That happened to me the other day while I was talking to my wonderful mother on skype using my iPad.
We started on the PC but I switch her over to the iPad because I wanted to show her the new Ikea shelves I put up in one end of the apartment. I then walked her around, leaned the ipad against a jar on my coffee table and sat back on the couch to enjoy the rest of our conversation. It was that moment as I looked around our living room, with the overpowering sunlight streaming in, folded socks on the table tray with TV remotes... and suddenly realized... here I was, speaking with my mother... LOOKING at my mother on a device no more than a quarter inch thick, who lives about 1700km away, having a conversation as if she was sitting next to me.
How did we get here? How many insane events had to occur to make this possible. And for me to think this was normal.
There will be a day... or I'm sure that day has already arrived, where people won't look at this as being anything out of the ordinary. I however like the feeling that sweeps over me when I come to the realization that I'm living in the future.
And I can't wait to see what's next.
