Tour Eiffel
Constructed between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world. At the end of the 20-year concession granted to Gustave Eiffel, which began on 31 December 1889, ownership of the Tower would revert to the owner of the land it was built on, the City of Paris.
