Cosmetic Bag Tutorial

Last week I purchased a handy kit for a cosmetic bag from Mama Said Sew. This is the second little kit I've purchased from them, and I love the idea. Their kits contain the necessary fabrics needed for a given project, and in this case the required notion (a zipper), along with a link to an outside blog for directions. For this "Zippered Pouch Kit" the directions are for drafting your own pattern so you could make any dimensions. The link to these directions is www.sewtogether.com.au/1/post/2011/03/a-tutorial-how-to-d...

However, I found the tutorial didn't match up with what I had in mind. I was thinking of a flat bottomed bag with flat sides. Indeed, the tutorial would get you an *almost* flat bottom. But, depending on the dimensions it may be more off or not. Also, this meant that the height could be less than intended since the lower portion of the sides would actually wrap under the bag and kinda poof out at the sides. Which could be a fine design feature, but the blog tutorial didn't mention this as the design intent. To me, the geometry dictated that the right triangles formed be oriented in the opposite way as the tutorial was drafted. So, here I've provided directions for my method, which will result in a flat bottom and flat sides.

This is a very simple design. Just a single pattern piece, cut twice from the exterior fabric and twice from lining. A zipper is inserted at the top of the pattern piece.
