12 by 12 Challenge # 04 A Crossing the bride to the darkness

Take what you believe will be the final series of photographs before you die — Nick Brandt

I chose to focus on a general theme of mortality throughout the month - and thus approached the world with an even more morbid outlook than usual. Since I don't believe in an afterlife, when I die and the regency of my consciousness of myself and the world is lost to me forever - it is effectively the end of the world (or so I believe).

River have long been a symbol of a boundary between life and death - most famously Lethe, the river in Hades which the dead walk through and forget everything. A man crossing a bridge, thus evading this fate, with particularly human and particularly absurd props (a bicycle and an umbrella) symbolised for me the futility of everything that can be done in the face of death - you might win a battle or two in your painfully absurd human way - but you will lose the war...and likely pay your taxes as you go :)
