Volume 2 – Issue 4 Another Doctors Appointment
They crept down alleyways and along rooftops most of the way from East Harlem. The morning was a quiet one so they didn’t draw much attention to themselves. It took the two of them just under an hour to get over to Greenwich Village and find 177A Bleecker Street. It felt like only a matter of days since Dani had walked up to the door of Dr Stephen Strange’s house to get answers for herself, but this time they weren’t here for her, they were here for victor. As they approached the front door Dani turns to look at Victor who seemed ominous this was a good idea. She nods at him, trying to re-assure him it will be fine, before knocking three times on the large wooden door. They waited a few moments before the clanking sound of someone opening the door filled their ears. The familiar sight of the little Asian servant, Wong, was comforting for Dani, as she knew she was in the right place. “Hi Wong, remember me? Danielle Rand. I was just wondering…” he interrupts her before she can finish. “Come Danielle, Stephen will see you and your new friend.” He shows them inside before leading them up and into a room that Dani hadn’t gone in the last time she came.
The room was much smaller than the other room Dani had been in, and much less furniture. All that was in the room was a surgeon’s bed, a fireplace and a few stools. Wong pulled up two stools for both Victor and me. “The doctor will be with you shortly, he’s just getting back from a trip so he shouldn’t be too long.” Wong bowed to us before walking back out of the room and closing the door, leaving a huge chunk of awkwardness in the room. Over the next ten or so minutes I tried to make conversation with Victor but none of it stuck for long. I asked him if he had any other relatives that he could stay with, to which he replied “Nah, only person I could think of is my mum but she packed up and left a few years ago when my paps joined the gangs.” I offered my house out to him and said he could stay there as long as he needs. At first he seemed very reluctant to say yes, but after thinking about his situation he realised it was either that or the streets so eventually agreed. After about fifteen minutes the door finally swung open and Stephen strode in, not in his usual smart attire, but in a long red jacket. “Sorry to keep you, just had to run through some things with Wong that needed his attention.” He walks over to the bed and folds his coat up, before placing it down. “Good trip?” I ask trying to be polite. “Not really” he replies whilst fiddling with some equipment over by the bed “you know how crazy it gets when I’m around, it just seems to always end up in a Nightmare.” He smirks as if he was trying to make a joke. “So what brings you here today Dani. I’m guessing it has something to do with mister Alvarez here?” Victor looks across at me confused “How the hell d’you know who I am crazy man?” Stephen smiles. “You didn’t think I could ignore your little stunt this morning did you?” He turns back to me “What would you like to know Dani?” I get up, so does Victor. “I was hoping you could just check him over, see what’s up with him. Its just a precaution.” Stephen starts preparing the surgeon bed and signals Victor to lay down. “Uh-uh, hell no am I letting this nut job play doctor on me.” Dani walks over to Victor. “Give us a minute Stephen.” She turns Victor around so his back faces Dr Strange. “Look Victor, this man helped me out when I needed it, when I didn’t know what was going on with my body. Just trust him, please?” Victor nods in response “Alright, but don’t think for one minute I’ll enjoy it.” We turn back around, “He’s all yours doc.” Stephen smiles “Thank you Dani, good work.” We walk over to the bed and I catch a glimpse of the time. “CRAP!” Just as Victor is about to lay down I remember I had an important meeting with the board of Rand industries in 30 minutes. “I’m so sorry Victor I need to get going.” He looks over at me, with a very scared facial expression, you’re leaving me here…with him…alone?” Dani nods “I’m so sorry I wish I could be here for this but I need to meet with someone. Here” I hand him a sheet of paper and a key. “This is my home address, and my house key. I’ll meet you back here when I’m done. Make yourself at home.” I turn to walk out “what happens if something goes wrong?” Victor asks. I spin around to face him “oh no problem, Stephen will give us a ring.” I turn to walk out again, as I leave the room I hear Stephen trying to make small talk with Victor, which sounds like he’s freaking Victor out even more. I smile before looking at the time again and darting off to work. As I did so one thought fell over my mind ‘maybe I don’t have to do this alone after all.”
