Nikon D3 tryouts... I recently got my hands on a 10 year old Nikon flagship D3...
I have been using my 8 year old Canon 5D2 for my digital work which is now mostly sports... I love the 135 2.0 for the beautiful shots it gives but the 5D2 is lacking on the AF tracking/speed and has a relatively slow 3.5 FPS as well...
Using the D3 was amazing, It can track the action and seems to know what to focus on before I do! With 3 times more FPS than the Canon I was able to get better and more action shots!
The only failings were my own. In the end I do not have a good enough lens for the D3 to get the quality I get with the Canon... I think the 105mm DC would be the ideal lens but they are not readily available or carry a unrealistic price when they can be found...
I was stuck with the 50mm 1.8 that originally came with my F4, a super lens but not the quickest AF response as it is one of Nikons original AF lenses from the 1990's
I also had a 18-70 DX (Crop sensor) zoom lens of decent quality and super quick AF. It nailed the action but at f5.6 in the dim lightning it jacked up the ISO and killed the quality. Even worse quality wise being a DX lens it only used 8mp worth of D3 sensor... On the bright side the D3 has a crazy something like 18FPS with the DX lens.
After using the 12.1 megapixel D3 I am impressed but without the 105mm lens I really want for it it wont come close to my 21.1 megapixel 5D2 quality even if if gets me better action shots...
