2016 June 19 ~ Mallard hen & ducklings

Photographed at the Watson family cottage on Peninsula Lake near Huntsville, in the District of Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
Every spring for decades we see new broods of Mallard (and sometimes Merganser) ducklings swimming with their mothers along the shoreline of our lake. Usually they start off with somewhere between 6 and 10 or so, but predators such as weasels and loons rapidly diminish their numbers, even day to day. The evening before I made this photo, there were seven rather than six in this family. Ah, cruel nature!
