Daylily seedpod

A successfully hand-fertilized daylily will form a large, sturdy seedpod with three lobes. Leave the seedpod on the scape if you are breeding for your own experimentation. Scapes that are developing seed will remain green until the seed is ripe. Scapes that have no seed pods will dry and turn brown earlier. Remember to water regularly in times of drought if you are trying to produce seed.

Most books recommend that you NOT over-stress a young or weak plant by asking it to put energy into the seed. A strong and healthy mother plant will be able to produce one or two pods without harm, in my experience.

Do not harvest until the pod dries out and opens naturally - See next photos for the opening of pods.
