In 1860 the 16-year-old Prince Alfred visited Durban. During his stay he was at the Masonic Hotel. He appeared in the balcony and was acclaimed by the people.

Later the hotel’s name was promptly changed by the Royal.

Later, at one time or another the Royal Hotel had among its guests the Prince Imperial, the Duke and Duchess of York, Cecil Rhodes, and wirters Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling, H. G. Wells and Mark Twain.
