Main building of an old farm - Buenos Aires

This old buiding (c. 1850), today a school situated in Palermo, was a great farm of an Italian immigrant named Comastri. In the times of the yellow fever epidemic (1871) this "mirador" was the highest point many miles around. This was then in the middle of the pampa and from here it was possible to hear and see the two-wagons railroad full of coffins. The yellow fever dead were interred far from the city center in a common grave. This grave in the middle of nothing... is today the Chacarita Cemetery, one of the largest in the world (95 ha).
