Between 1518 and 1524 Jan van Scorel made journeys to Italy, Austria, Nürnberg and even Jerusalem. He was for some time a pupil of Albrecht Dürer and in Venice Giorgione had a considerable influence on his work. In Rome the Nederlandish Pope Adrian VI appointed him painter to the Vatican where he enjoyed the influence of Michelangelo and Raphael.
Returned to Holland he brought with him a new way of painting. He settled in Utrecht. When he died in 1562 Van Scorel left behind a wealth of altarpieces, portraits and other paintings. Many of his works fell victim to the Hollandish Iconoclasm ( "Beeldenstorm" ) in 1566 by followers of the Protestant Reformation.
