Maria at the Party, 2007

Dancer, two sodas, two purses, and a cane. Blindness does not usually mean you cannot see anything ("always in darkness"). It means that your eyes cannot provide you with most of the information people usually obtain visually. Maria sees light, color and movement and can orient toward certain objects. She cannot identify the soda can, but once she knows what it is, she knows more or less where it is. She cannot identify the dancer, but she can appreciate that she is dancing. She is a blind girl, even though she can see. Her cane keeps her from bumping into objects or tripping on things when navigating unfamiliar spaces.
