Great Horned Owl chick
Hempstead Lake State Park, NY. This bird's nest collapsed from wind and rain this very morning. Park rangers rescued the two chicks, cleaned them up, and set up a nest box in a neighboring tree. Unfortunately, this chick's sibling fell out of the tree. It somehow made its way to another tree in a grove 100 yards away, and hauled itself up by its beak and talons. Birders located the other chick and its mother, who perched nearby with a watchful eye. The male owl had also been seen in the area. We all hope the two adults can keep their separated chicks safe and fed for the several additional weeks it will take for them to fledge.
