Having speculated for years about the NPR sound, the sound they get from all those wonderful voices, I think this artifact, the Neumann U-87 is probably, next to the people who own those voices, the most significant part of the chain. A large percentage of broadcasters use either an Electro Voice RE-20, a Sennheiser 421, and occasionally a Shure SM-7 all really fine dynamic mics, all costing about $400. The base price of the U-87 is $2,700 USD, the mics NPR use have "aftermarket optimizations" by Klaus Heyne in the Corbett Oregon area.....remember this during the next pledge drive, and send money anyway.
