Deze foto is gemaakt in Zoetermeer bij de Driemanspolder.
De kluut is uniek door zijn opvallende zwart-witte verenkleed, lange poten en zijn opgewipte snavel.
Paartjes baltsen opvallend.
Broedt meestal in kolonies.
Nest een kuiltje in de grond, soms wat opvallender met een echte nestrand.
Op slik, kaal weiland, akkers. Eén broedsel, 3-4 eieren.
De kluut zeeft in ondiep water met maaiende bewegingen van de opgewipte snavel dierlijk voedsel uit het slik, op de tast.
Kluten die in Nederland broeden, trekken in het najaar weg naar Zuidwest-Europa en Noordwest-Afrika, maar overwinteren steeds vaker in Nederland.

The avocet is unique due to its striking black-and-white plumage, long legs, and its upturned beak. Pairs display noticeable courtship behavior. It usually breeds in colonies. Nests in a small depression in the ground, sometimes a bit more noticeable with a true nesting edge. On mudflats, bare pastures, fields. One brood, 3-4 eggs. The avocet sifts through shallow water with sweeping movements of its upturned beak to find animal food from the mud, by touch. Avocets that breed in the Netherlands migrate in the autumn to southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa, but increasingly spend the winter in the Netherlands.
