Zwart-witte vogel met een rode 'broek'. In de vlucht vallen de grote witte schoudervlekken op.
Het mannetje heeft een rode vlek op het achterhoofd.
Deze ontbreekt bij het vrouwtje.
Grote bonte spechten hakken in bomen een nestholte uit met een rond gat.
Ze hebben een voorkeur voor zachte houtsoorten, zoals berken.
In de nestholte worden de eieren gewoon op het hout gelegd.
De grote bonte specht heeft de voor spechten kenmerkende golvende vlucht.
Hun roffel en hun roep ('tsjik') is vaak te horen in oudere bossen, parken en tuinen.

This is missing in the female.
