The death of a great democracy?
It is pretty obvious to those who are listening to the publicly available evidence and information coming out of the Jan 6 committee and the investigations into electoral fraud by Trump and his sycophants, that Trump was leading a corrupt attempt to overthrow the democratic republic that is the United States of America.
The fact that so few of our elected GOP leaders have said anything about this and either run away or just jumped on board, clearly indicates the GOP is dead as a party based in democracy.
We have clear evidence of Trump’s/the GOP’s coordinated effort to create and falsely submit “as real”, the slate of official electors from 7 states to the US Electoral College. We have a clear record of his attempt to use his position as President to bully and coerce the Secretary of State of Georgia to “find” votes so he can change the outcome in Georgia. There is evidence he attempted to find ways his sycophants could seizes voting machines in some of these same states. We know of his effort to bypass the DOJ and install his own new sycophantic US Attorney General to get the DOJ to do his bidding, after Bill Barr resigned and the new AG and DOJ staff would not also do his bidding.
It is clear he incited those at his January 6th rally at the White House to walk down to the Capital, knowing violent groups of his supporter were there to disrupt the Congress’ effort to count and certify the Electoral College votes.
There will be more. And given a chance he will do it again.
So I hope in the coming weeks as more and more evidence comes out, more and more people here will also clearly see this.
Our democracy survived a real and dangerous attempt on its life. If we don’t stand up against this, he and his sycophants or other, smarter, authoritarians will try to do it again. Having learned from the mistakes of the last attempt, they are much more likely to succeed then.
The DOJ needs to take clear action to show it is actively investigating the leadership (ie Trump) of this coup attempt.
And the remaining supporters in the GOP need to decide which side they are on…No one in this country should be supporting this, especially anyone who took an oath to protect and defend our country from all enemies foreign and domestic.
