Deaths on the scale of WWII

Over the last 4 days, the US death rate has been over 400 deaths per day and we show no signs of that slowing down nationwide, in fact we are doubling roughly every 3 days.

On average the US death rate across WWII was only on average 300 soldiers per day. This picture is of the makeshift temporary military cemetery on Iwo Jima in 1945. More people died in the last 4 days in the US because of COVID19, than graves are visible in this picture (Over 1800 Americans died of COVID19 in the last 4 days and by early tomorrow morning more Americans will have died because of COVID19 than died on 9/11).

Yesterday, the President was claiming that he was doing a great job because the ultimate number of deaths might be only be in 100,000 to 200,000 range. He claimed that if he did nothing there would have been 2.2 million and how great was that, that he was doing something.

Well. First, two points. South Korea, which reported its first case on the same day as the US, but began aggressively testing immediately, now has just 158 total deaths, an increase of just 4 since yesterday. The current US death rate is over 100 times greater.

Second, China which was hit earlier by this pandemic and truly had no warning, has a reported death total of around 3500 people. They are now starting to remove restrictions to movement and the economy within their country.

While some might cite issues with the actual numbers reported, it is clear they are feeling their pandemic is under control enough to begin removing their restrictions. It is possible that this is too early for them and then they may again spike up, if they reopen to quickly, but either way they are currently at a much more stable condition than the extremely rapid rate of increase we in the US are currently experiencing.

How can one claim credit for handling a crisis that will kill over 100,000 Americans, when we had weeks of warning and yet did nothing?

I’m glad to see we are beginning to take this crisis more seriously, but we still have many states and regions who are not practicing state wide movement and social distancing restrictions.

We now have growing hot spots in Louisiana, Michigan and Florida, besides the earlier hot spots of Seattle, New York, Chicago and my own Santa Clara County (ie Silicon Valley).

However, Seattle’s efforts do seem to maybe be flattening the curve there, and maybe in Santa Clara County a bit too. We can hope.

Let me also be quite clear. I applaud and greatly honor the efforts of those who are on the front lines of this crisis; health care, emergency services and people providing access to food and medical supplies to all of us.

I also support those who are working behind the scenes supporting the required facilities and equipment others need to fight on the front lines, people providing PPE and ventilators, the Corps of Engineers, military and support contractors building new facilities and just common people helping keep their neighbors or their communities feed and safe thru their efforts.

I have great confidence that we, as smart and compassionate human beings, can rise to the need of the crisis and we can conquer it, however, I have been so disappointed with those, who in the face of this growing crisis, weeks ago refused to act when they should have and many thousands of Americans and others around the world will die needlessly because of this inaction. The lack of any strategic planning and the lies and other misleading comments also are quite disappointing when we should be working to address the crisis and not have him calling Governors and other critics juvenile names or boasting about the size of his rating… as the nation burns.

At today's WH briefing, many company CEOs touted have they will be producing large number of needed and necessary products 90 and 100 days from now. Had we started our efforts some nearly 90 days ago (like many were saying we should), we would not be in great need today and for the next couple of months and we would have been in a great place to have been a place to be a great leader again in the world and have saved many thousands more people.

And to those who again return to the false claim, We didn’t know? The Chinese and the South Koreans and several other countries did and acted and they are suffering at levels a 1/10 or 1/100 of what we are suffering today.

And so, here we are where we are today.
