Izola is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Adriatic coast. It is the seat of the Municipality of Izola and is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. Founded in the 7th century by refugees from Aquileia on a small island by the coast of Istria. This is where its name comes from – it is derived from the Italian word "isola", which means "island". In the 9th century, the town came under the influence of the Republic of Venice and remained under its rule until 1797, when this area became part of the Holy Roman Empire, and in the Napoleonic era it was part of the Illyrian Provinces of the French Empire. At that time, the city walls were demolished and the material was used to fill the strait separating the island from the mainland. Today, Izola is a popular tourist town with the largest marina on the Slovenian coast, sunny beaches and many restaurants offering fresh fish and seafood.

Izola – miasto w południowo-zachodniej Słowenii, nad Morzem Adriatyckim, siedziba gminy Izola. Założone w VII wieku przez uchodźców z Aquilei na małej wyspie u wybrzeży Istrii. Stąd też pochodzi jego nazwa – wywodzi się ona od włoskiego słowa "isola", które oznacza wyspę. W IX wieku miejscowość znalazła się pod wpływem Republiki Weneckiej i pod jej panowaniem pozostawała aż do 1797 roku, kiedy to obszar ten stał się częścią Świętego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego, a w epoce napoleońskiej stanowił część autonomicznych Prowincji Iliryjskich Cesartwa Francuskiego. Wtedy też zburzono mury miejskie, a materiał wykorzystano do zasypania cieśniny oddzielającej wyspę od stałego lądu. Obecnie Izola to popularne miasteczko turystyczne z największym na słoweńskim wybrzeżu portem jachtowym, słonecznymi plażami oraz licznymi restauracjami oferującymi świeże ryby i owoce morza.
