Shiloh Church Replica - West Door

Note the rustic wooden hinges.

In April, 1862, the US Army advanced by ships on the Tennessee river to a place called Pittsburg Landing, in southern Tennessee. The Union forces spread south to defend the bridgehead and await the arrival of another Union army marching overland from Nashville, Tennessee. A Confederate army marched north from Corinth, Mississippi, to attack and destroy the Union bridgehead before the Nashville force arrived. The Battle of Shiloh began on April 6 and continued until the next day, when the Nashville force arrived and turned the tide of the battle. The battle was named after Shiloh church, a small log structure used as a Union headquarters at the start of the battle, captured by the Confederates and used in the same manner, and recaptured on the second day of battle. The church building did not survive the battle. The replica we see today was built in 2001.

On the road trip to Indiana, I traveled from the town of Corinth, Mississippi, to the American Civil War battlefield of Shiloh, Tennessee, 17 miles (27km) to the north. I visited this place on October 22, 2019.
