Gerpissvæðið

Gerpissvæðið er landsvæði milli Norðfjarðar og Reyðarfjarðar þar sem áður voru blómlegar sveitir og sjósókn stunduð. Á 21. öldinni fóru byggðir svæðisins í eyði en friðsæld og stórbrotin náttúran stendur eftir. Barðsneseldstöðin er elsta eldstöð Austfjarða og var virk fyrir 12-13 milljónum ára. Á norðaustanverðu Barðsnesi er þykk lagskipt gjóska þar sem er að finna kolaða trjástofna í uppréttri stöðu, og eru það elstu gróðurleifar á Austurlandi. Svæðið var friðlýst árið 2021.

Gerpissvæðið is the region between Norðfjörður and Reyðarfjörður, where there were once thriving rural communities and active fishing. In the 21st century, the settlements in the area were abandoned, but tranquility and magnificent nature remain. The Barðsnes volcano is the oldest volcano in the Eastfjords and was active 12–13 million years ago. In the northeastern part of Barðsnes, there is a thick layer of stratified tephra where charred tree trunks can be found standing upright. These are the oldest plant remains in East Iceland. The area was designated as a protected area in 2021
