Hekla

View towards Mt. Hekla (1.491m) from one of the lower ridges we hiked along during our day hike to Sindri crater. Hekla is a stratovolcano in southern Iceland and one of the most active volcanoes on the island, since 874, over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the mountain. During the Middle Ages a lot of superstition centered on the mountain, in Europe it was believed to be the gateway to hell.

September 3rd we ventured on a day hike to Sindri crater and Ásgrindur peaks in Tindfjöll, Syðra Fjallabaki, Iceland.

Tindfjallajökull is the smallest glacier on the island, it covers the caldera of an extinct stratovolcano, approximately 7-10 km in diameter. On a clear day the hiker is awarded with amazing views over Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull, Þórsmörk and Fjallabak.
