Ásbyrgi is a wide, horseshoe-shaped canyon with sheer rock faces up to 100 m high. At its innermost end lies a small pond, Botnstjörn, surrounded by mossy rocks and birch trees. The stillness of the water and faint echoes from the cliffs lend a mystical atmosphere to the site.
According to legend, Ásbyrgi was formed when Sleipnir, Odin´s eight-legged stallion, put one of his hooves down as the god rode by. In reality, the formation of Ásbyrgi was less poetic, geologists hypothesize that the deep ravine is a result of massive glacial flooding, which occurred when a volcano erupted underneath the Vatnajökull ice cap, thousands of years ago.
