First Day of School, Nepal
The children pictured in this photo are all members of the Child Protective Centre (CPC) in Matatheata, Nepal. When myself and other volunteers first arrived at this severely in-need orphanage, less than half of the 35 children were in enrolled in school.
All of the children are originally from Jumla, a small remote village where poverty and Maoist activity have rendered it a virtual war zone. One of the greatest accomplishments of my volunteer time in Nepal was helping to see that all of our 35 children got enrolled in classes at the local school. Pictured here are the children on their first day of school. Some had never attended school before, and virtually all of them had never owned more than one pair of clothes- let alone a new uniform, backpack, school shoes and school supplies. Their delight at this new opportunity was both infectous and touching. As a westerner, it came as a very real reality check that for many children worldwide, the basic opportunity of recieving an education is more a privilege than a right. To date, all of the CPC children are attending school regularly, and earning some of the best marks in their respective classes.
