Lion Temple (Temple of Apedemak), Musawwarat es-Sufra, Sudan, North-east Africa
This Lion Temple, or Temple of Apedemak, predates the one in Naga by two centuries. It was built by King Arnekhamani (c.235-218 BCE) towards the end of the third century BCE. The front of the temple is designed as a pylon, following Egyptian architectural models. (Photo courtesy of HF - the light was wrong when we were there!)
