Old, Knackered and Weezy
If any of you have been following the Nevada Northern Railway on Facebook recently; they have been sharing behind the scenes photos of the restoration of 40. Over 100 years of patches and deferred problems had left the engine and its running gear quite worn out.
For those who got a chance to watch 40 in action in its final years prior to going out of service, the sound the engine produced told what was happening on the running gear where the eye couldn't see. The engine always sounded a bit out of step, a bit clunky, and a bit like it was showing its age. Compared to the other NN engines (93 with its clockwork precision, and 81 with its almost too tight squeaking fresh from restoration), 40 always showed her age. The engine's rebuild is a long deserved opportunity to make sure it can run for another hundred years.
