When Black Petals Bloom

by Memorial Union Gallery

Leeya Rose Jackson is a Painter, Printmaker, Art Director (formerly at Wieden+ Kennedy NY), Illustrator and Graphic Designer from Detroit, Mi and living in Minneapolis, MN. Her graphic design/art direction studio, Noisemakers, often prioritizes BIPOC/LGBTQIA- owned businesses and organizations. Her recent work When Black Petals Bloom examines the resilience of Black American Femme Women. The paintings and digital designs consider how the Black Femme is represented and understood beyond the tropes parsed by culture, media and history. Through bright, modern, traditionally Western feminine colors and strong, centrally located figures, Jackson’s work often confronts viewers with subjects both resilient and vulnerable. Her work links the universal and mythological with a complexity that might only be understood by the multiplicity of roles a woman embodies.
