Speculative Architecture and Oblique Representation

by Memorial Union Gallery

Focused on "alternative modalities" of representation not typically associated with modern architectural conventions these works evoke values, philosophies, historical and mythical reference as well as personal interpretation in ways that engage architectural inquiry as a situation, in time and space. Not reducible to prescriptive visual measure implied in standardized architectural notations after the nineteenth-century, these prospective works are part of a tradition of “resistance” in architecture that borrows lessons from the arts to query embodied experiences for further translation into meaningful architectural programs. Teetering in an ambiguous space between art and construction, this exhibition features artefacts by Gretta Berens, Diedrich Harms, Kara Iliff, Natalia Jara, Richard Maas, Bailey Nelson and Aaron Warner, who are currently in Professor Stephen Wischer’s section of Design Thesis Studio.
