Speculative Architecture VI
DREAMING IN ARCHITECTURE
Rachel Monsebroten
In our modern society, we have consumer access at the touch of a button to extremely complex technology including clothing, phones, and furniture. While we are immersed in this constantly, our connection to making and the arts has been diluted. This results in a loss of empathy for those who create and make these items. A place in the world that has a rich history of stories around making art, architecture, and fashion created by needs is Venice, Italy. Poliphilo’s “Strife of Love in a Dream” is one of the stories that takes place in Venice. The main character seeks his love through a series of architectural spaces which is the backdrop for these meaningful, dreamlike, ethereal experiences. Venice, California was intended to emulate the character and stories of Venice, Italy to create an emphasis on the arts and fashion in the United States. In the dawn of our consumer culture, this intention was lost along the way. Therefore, I am proposing a campus of maker spaces and galleries for fashion and art to be designed in Venice, California that connects users to stories, making rather than consuming, and the original intent of the site. In my thesis artefact, the art and fashion is layered with fabric and a projection of a journey through Venice, Italy resulting in a dreamlike quality. This dream and journey is housed in the architectural frame, constructed by meaningful tectonics and materials, which is representative of my proposed design. While users use the space, the hope is that by journeying through the ethereal space, we will awaken or reawaken the desire for creating and making art, fashion, and architecture.
