HARMONY OF EVERYTHING
Anna Rybacki
There is a harmony within chaos between all things, like a cosmic song, and we are not independent of – in fact, we are inextricably a part of it, contributing to the attunement of the universe with each breath and each heartbeat. Music has a remarkable quality of depicting this phenomenon and heightening our awareness to our part in it, of our connection to everything around us, which in turn allows us to see things differently. Yet our modern society seems to have lost an awareness of it. Why? It can seem too spiritual, in a world that has become more and more secular and looks to science to explain things. Our advancement of knowledge and technology over time has nurtured in us a sense of control that opposes control outside of ourselves, yet the very origins of music stem from sacred rituals and the acknowledgement of the divine. While theater and all of its sounds once used to be a visceral, participatory experience, we now see a disconnect sown by a growingly secular society. My thesis seeks to resurrect and redefine for a modern audience the spiritual and psychosomatic experience that music once was.
These machines represent the cosmic connection between us and everything around us. The vibrations of sound touch a metal plate and move whatever lies on it in a mystic, yet methodical, fashion. The sounds that play are sounds that the sun and Earth emit, and they are the very means by which grains of sand and drops of color dance upon it: giving us a glimpse of the harmony between everything. We too are a part of this harmony, and in my piece I invite you to spill paint on the paper that lies on the metal however you please, watching as the sound vibrations direct its movement. As one sheet of paper fills up, take another and layer it on top as a new canvas. The layers of paper represent time, throughout which we lose our touch with this connection to everything. With each layer that gets added, notice how the paint you spill moves less and less…
