This garden spider that I found in my eucalyptus tree was well hidden wrapped around the small fork of some branches during the day but at night she spins a web which collects not only insects but also pollen which is a rich source of protein for her when she eats her web at the end of each night.
The spider recycles 90% of her web in making the next night's web so is very efficient in her use of energy indeed.
