Kingsgate
View of ruins on the estate of Lord Holland at Kingsgate on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. One accompanying note explains 'Arx Ruochim (Secundum Revdm. & admodum ornatum. Et eruditum virum Cornelium Willes). Another note reads 'Tempore Principis Vortigern Annum Circiter CCCCLVIII Aedificata'. The Arx Ruochim is a folly built by Lord Holland in the style of a Henry VIII coastal fort, as seen in Walmer and Deal. It pretended to replace a tower erected here by King Vortigern in c.458. Lord Holland built a number of follies around his house here, in the late 18th century.
