Geology: this limestone was formed beneath the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The continent of Europe and the continent of Africa are v - e - r - y g - r - a - d - u - a - l - l - y meeting each other over millions of years. So, the limestone is being forced up. Here we see various layers of the limestone above the waters.
