A special feature of the hospital, as well as in Lubeck as a whole, is the south portal with its fitted arches of limestone in Gotland style. The church was probably reconsecrated when the stellar vault was installed in the middle nave in 1495. Unlike the side aisles, the two stellar vaults of the middle nave are not separated by abroad wall arch but by a rib, giving the impression of a single large vault. It is easy to see that these stellar vaults are of more recent construction than the vaults of the side aisles. The western stellar vault cuts through the three windows in the middle gable, as well as covering some of the wall paintings on he east wall (choir), which was formerly the end wall. The installation of the stellar vault replaced a wooden arched roof structure broken into five parts that originally continued into Langes Haus. Restoration work was performed in the interior of the church at the turn of the century, and then between 1979 and 1984 conservation and restoration work was carried out on the vaults, the choir, the altars, the pulpit and the individual figures, all financed by considerable sums of money donated by various foundations and associations.Guidebook.
