Project: Austria - Salzburg

A first real glimpse of the Dom from across Domplatz. An important statue is protected by that pyramid.

The majestic Dom Cathedral is the most significant Italian monumental structure north of the Alps and already the third church construction in the same location. The construction of today's cathedral, following the plans of the Italian court architect Santino Solari, began in 1614 under Archbishop Markus Sittikus. The house of God was consecrated by Archbishop Paris Lodron in 1628; the towers, however, were not completed until 1655.

Untersberg marble was used for the three-storey facade and four-storey spires.
