Hôtel particulier
A hôtel particulier, in France and Belgium, is a type of stately residence, palace or urban mansion inhabited by a single owner or family and their servants. It crystallized as a typology in France in the 17th century, especially in Paris, but it changed compositionally and functionally over time. Until the end of the Old Regime, the French word hôtel had several meanings, however, at that time the retronym hôtel particulier appeared to specifically designate these private mansions.
