3. The race winner Lex Davison in the Essex Racing Team's Aston Martin Zagato DB4 GT (Reg 2 VEV)

A race report in “The Motor” magazine

The G.T.Race (17 laps – 51 miles)

The British Grand Prix had been preceded before lunch by a 17 lap race for G.T. Cars. Both the Ferrari 250GT entries were non-starters, Graham Whitehead's car having been damaged in a road accident and Andre Simon's in the Six Hours of Auvergne race the previous Sunday. The race did not prove the gift for the three E-type Jaguars that might have been expected, however, for the Equipe Endeavour car driven by Michael Parkes was in trouble from the fall of the starting flag and never completed a lap, and although at the end of the first lap an E-type was leading , namely the John Coombes car driven by Jack Sears. The two Essex Racing Team Aston Martins of John Ogier were second and third. Both the Zagarto DB4 GT driven by Lex Davison and the normal DB4 GT with John Whitmore at the wheel were running on rain tyres, in spite of the circuit being dry, and they were the only cars in the race so equiped.

Once Lex Davison had grown accustomed to the different feel of the car on rain tyres, he began to close on the leading Jaguar, and in spite of all Jack Sears could do, and he can do a very great deal in the way of fast motoring, he was unable to shake off the pursuing Aston and its Australian driver. On the very last lap, Lex Davison managed to pass the E-type and shot over the line to win, no mean achievement for a driver who looks like the prosperous middle aged business man that in fact he is, rather than a dashing young man about town.
