This was my first ever Wels catfish that I caught at 68Lb in October 1998.
The Wels catfish isn't one of the hardest freshwater fish to catch, but it is definitely one of the hardest fighting.
I wouldn't personally fish for them while spawning, nor just after. After spawning they need to get their strength back. So they need food, but the last thing they need is being hooked in a battle, because just after spawning they are exhausted, and anyone who's caught them just after will tell you. They don't fight nowhere near so hard just after this period.
