Predator

This guy showed up in our yard near dusk putting Mama Kite on high alert. In fact, the presence of this owl and its mate sent the whole local bird community into chaos. Both kites were sounding their alarm call (a third high note at the end of the customary descending call) and were charging the canopy over the owls while several crows joined in with kamikaze forays down through the forest at speed. Indeed, the deeper into the foliage the owls withdrew, the smaller were their assailants. Kites, Crows, Blue Jays, Titmice (and on the margins Cardinals). Meanwhile, and most surprising to me, a column of frenetically teetering Chimney Swifts formed above the fray. The whole circus seemed to follow the owls from one locale to the next.
