Between Ostend and Bruges, behind the blond sand dunes, just off the Old Road, there is this village, Houtave...

Medieval and traditional in concept, the church in the middle, surrounded by the graveyard, then the circle of houses with the happy red roofs, and wider still the farms.

When we were there the land was lying, spent, just stubble left after the harvest of waving golden cornfields, the ominous sky more and more pregnant with rain, the sun still in and out, behind us, brushing in patches of light.

So typical, so unique, so beautiful, that flat Flanders that holds such a special place in my heart.
